WILLIAM J. “BILL” VAN VELDHUIZEN
William Jacob “Bill” Van Veld-huizen, the son of Andrew and Elizabeth “Betty” (Oordt) Van Veldhuizen, was born December 12, 1927 on a farm near Newkirk, Iowa. He grew-up in the Newkirk and Hospers area, where he received his education and graduated from the Newkirk High School in 1945. On June 23, 1949, he was united in marriage to Rose Marie Verdoorn in Orange City, Iowa. They lived for a brief time in Hospers and then in Boulder, Colorado, before settling in Sheldon. For many years, Bill was a door-to-door milkman initially working for Moelman’s Dairy in Sheldon and then for Wells Blue Bunny. His territory covered an area arcing through Boyden, George, Ashton, Melvin, Sanborn and Archer. Bill became a resident of the Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon in October of 2003. He passed away on Monday, July 21, 2008 at the Sanford Medical Center in Sheldon, reaching the age of 80 years, 7 months and 9 days.
Bill was a long-time member of the Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon where he sang in the church choir. He enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking and square dancing.
Bill leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 59 years, Rose and their seven children, Harvey and his wife, Solange Van Veldhuizen of Potomac, MD; Charlotte and her husband, Rev. Calvin Vande Zande of Waupun, WI; Glenda and her husband, David Wurpts of Sheldon, IA; Kevin and his wife, Terri Van Veldhuizen of Camino, CA; Andy and his wife, Sheryl Van Veldhuizen of Citrus Heights, CA; Douglas Van Veldhuizen of Granite Bay, CA; David and his wife, Julia Van Veldhuizen of Lowell, MI; sixteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister, Iona and her husband, Douglas Heusinkveld of Rushmore, MN; and two brothers and their spouses, Philip and Deborah Van Veldhuizen of Reno, NV and Kenneth and Shirley Van Veldhuizen of Worthington, MN; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister in infancy.
