WILLIAM H. SCHWARTZ
William “Bill” Harry Schwartz, the son of Edmund N. and Gertrude (Briggs) Schwartz, was born December 11, 1915 in Fulton, Illinois, but lived in Gregory County near Burke, South Dakota where he attended school through his sophomore year of high school. In 1933, he moved with his parents to Archer, Iowa where he completed his education and graduated from Archer High School in 1935. On June 1, 1941 he was united in marriage to Patricia Saupe in the Philby Church in Baker Township of O’Brien County. After their marriage the couple lived on a farm north of Sheldon before moving to the original Saupe Farm, that farm became a Century Farm in 1988. Bill farmed for 37 years and was a seed corn dealer; he retired from farming in 1978 and they moved into Sheldon in 1997. He passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at the Prairie View Home in Sanborn, Iowa, reaching the age of 89 years, 7 months and 15 days.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Archer and served on several church boards. Bill was active in the Farm Bureau and the Extension Service; he was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge. When Bill was president of the O’Brien County Historical Society, they developed the Heritage Park in Primghar, Iowa. Bill was also active in the Prairie Queen Kiwanis in Sheldon. He enjoyed bowling, trap shooting, fishing and traveling.
Bill leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 64 years, Pat of Sheldon, Iowa; a son and his wife, Richard and Judie Schwartz of Elmhurst, Illinois; a son-in-law, Neil Schalekamp of Issaquah, Washington; 5 grandchildren, Cari and her husband Mike Christopher, Cathi and her husband, Roberto Reyes, Susan and her husband, Dan Carollo, Steven Schalekamp and Caily Schwartz; 5 great-grandchildren, Emily and Michael Christopher, Ashley Reyes, Karen and Jonathan Carollo; a sister, Mollie Parry of Sheldon, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Schalekamp; his parents, and a brother, Briggs Schwartz and a sister, Harriet Gillespie.
