WILBERT F. EBEL
Wilbert Carl Friedrich Ebel the son of William and Helen (Gaudian) Ebel was born May 26, 1924 in Caledonia Township, O’Brien County, Iowa. Wilbert attended Germantown school followed by being a farm hand in the Germantown area before entering the U.S. Marines on December 2, 1943 serving with the 4th Marine Division. After being discharged on April 27, 1946, he was united in marriage to Leora Shafer on August 18, 1946 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown. After their marriage the couple farmed south of Germantown and Paullina before moving to the family farm near Calumet, Iowa. He was a devoted farmer besides crop farming; he milked cows, fed cattle and hog and also raised chicken and sheep. Wilbert and Leora retired in 1989 and moved into their home in Paullina. The couple remained in Paullina where together they enjoyed taking bus trips. Wilbert and Leora later moved to the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley to make their home. He passed away on Thursday June 2, 2011 at the Spencer Hospital reaching the age of 87 years and 6 days.
He was baptized on June 8, 1924 and later confirmed on April 10, 1938 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown and was currently a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina .He was also a member of the Russell West Post of the American Legion of Paullina. Wilbert enjoyed spending time with his family, bowling, playing cards and spending time on the farm.
Wilbert is survived by his wife Leora of Hartley, two sons and their wives Dennis and Connie Ebel of Hartley and David and Pam Ebel of Paullina; a daughter and her husband Denice and Doug Hicks of Sutherland; ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; one brother Burdette Ebel of Primghar and four sisters Darlene Hoermann of Paullina, Marge Mesner of Lake Park, Adeline Traver of Paullina and Marian Otto of Hartley; also other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a grandson Travis Ebel and his parents.
