Waltera Harriet Lucas, the daughter of Henry and Everdina (Moll) Haalboom was born March 13, 1917 in Chandler, Minnesota. She received her education in schools in Archer and Sheldon, Iowa areas. She moved to California where for eight years she was a seamstress in a sewing factory. On May 29, 1942, she was united in marriage to Emerson Lucas in Loa Angeles, California. The couple lived for a short time in California and in 1945 moved to the Sheldon area to begin farming. In 1954, they moved to a farm northeast of Primghar where they farmed until their retirement in 1984. The couple remained on the family farm in their retirement years. Emerson preceded her in death on June 3, 1996. After Emerson’s death Waltera moved to Primghar. She remained in Primghar until moving to the Sanford Health Center Senior Care in 2008. She passed away at Senior Care on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 reaching the age of 93 years, 3 months and 10 days.
She was baptized by Rev. Rhinehart at one month and made confession of faith at 18 years of age at the Hope Reformed Church in Los Angeles, California. She was a member of the American Reformed Church in Primghar and for 45 years was a Sunday School teacher. She was very active in the Women’s Society of the church and in the East Sioux Classical Union.
Waltera leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Helen Lucas of Sheldon; three grandchildren, one step granddaughter; a sister-in-law, Jeane Haalboom; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Larry; her parents, one brother, Rik Haalboom; and one sister, Louise Henegan.
