VIOLA D. DE JONG

Viola Dorothea De Jong, the daughter of Henry F. and Alma (Schultze) De Jong, was born May 11, 1914 on a farm west of Sheldon, IA in Sioux County. She received her early education in rural schools in Sioux and O’Brien Counties. She graduated from Sheldon High School and Sheldon Junior College. Following this she spent a few years on the farm with her parents and during this time she was the 4-H leader for the Floyd Township Girls 4-H Club. In July of 1939, Viola accepted a position with the Iowa Employment Security Commission in Des Moines, IA as a junior clerk. In 1941, she worked for the United States Employment Service, Department of Labor as a general clerk in Des Moines and Council Bluffs, IA and in January of 1943, she was promoted to Employment Interviewer in Des Moines. On December 1, 1944, she joined the United States Navy Waves in New York, NY. She received training for Mail School at Hunter College in the Bronx, NY, with duty station at the Fleet Post Office in New York until her honorable discharge at the end of World War II on March 1, 1946. She then returned to Des Moines, IA and worked at the Veterans Hospital as a claims examiner and as a secretary to the Dr’s. on the ward. After working for 3 years, she enrolled at Iowa State College in Ames receiving her degree in Home Economics, Household equipment Specialist. During her summer vacations she worked at a summer resort in East Tawas, MI and Idaho Springs, CO. In 1953, she accepted a position as Home Economist Demonstrator for the Wisconsin Electric Power Company in West Bend, WI for 26 enjoyable years until her retirement in 1979. In 2001, she returned to Sheldon to be near her family and leaving behind many dear friends.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sheldon and a past member of the 5th Avenue United Methodist Church in West Bend, WI and of the United Methodist Women and the Wesleyan Service Circle, serving as President, Secretary and Treasurer for many years.
Viola is survived by four great nieces and nephews and their spouses, Marlyn and Susan Ling of West Des Moines, IA; Michele and Bret Boyer of Cedar Rapids, IA; Alan and Sarah Ling of North English, IA and Pamela and Shawn Still of Parnell, IA; ten great-great nieces and nephews, Alex Ling; Tazia and Gregory Heyl; Jacob Heusing; Justin, Abigail and Benjamin Ling; Nickolas, Allison and Valerie Still; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister and brother-in-law, Fern and Robert Ling.
