Viola was baptized and later confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Evangelical & Reformed Church, Calumet, Iowa. She attended the Gaza Consolidated School, graduating with honors in 1937.
Viola and Edward Hellmann were married in Calumet on October 5, 1940. After their marriage they lived on the family farm east of Germantown. To this union three children were born. She began working in the Paullina Bakery in the mid 60’s and continued to work there for 18 years. Her life was filled with music, especially playing piano and dancing. She also enjoyed embroidering, quilting, gardening and cooking.
Edward passed away in January 1975. Viola continued to live on the family farm until 1983 when she moved to Paullina. She became a resident of the Paullina Care Center in 1999 and passed away on April 24, 2007 at the care center at the age of 87 years and 26 days.
