VERNON L. INGALLS
Vernon Leigh Ingalls, the son of Maurice L. and Edna (Clements) Ingalls was born December 28, 1906 in Geddes, South Dakota. The family moved to Sheldon in 1917, where Vernon lived the rest of his life. After graduating from Sheldon High School, he was employed at the Hollander Drug Store for several years. He was united in marriage to Carrie Katherine Diekevers on June 5, 1934 in the home of her parents in Boyden, Iowa. Vernon and Carrie made their home at 618 10th Street in Sheldon. On December 14, 1935, a baby girl, Lorae Joan came into their lives. Vernon operated a service station for two years. He was then employed as a bookkeeper for Slagle Lumber Company. In 1941, he was employed as a salesman for Metz Baking Company. After his retirement in 1964, he worked as a salesman at the White House Clothing Store in Sheldon.
He was a member of the Sheldon United Methodist Church, having joined in 1926. He and his wife Carrie were members of the church choir for 53 years. He also served on several church boards. Vernon and Carrie enjoyed traveling and he was an avid photographer and had a love of trains. Carrie passed away February 12, 1987 after a long battle with cancer. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a charter member of Prairie Queen Kiwanis Club and is the last of the charter members. Vernon was a 50 year member of U.C.T. He also served for 34 years on the Park Board of Sheldon. He was united in marriage to Irene (Vos) Fritts of Sheldon on June 16, 1990.
Survivors include his wife, Irene of Sheldon; one daughter, Lorae Wilson of Iowa Falls, Iowa and a sister, Ruth Schimming of Mitchell, South Dakota; also five grandchildren, Steven and Kim Shane of Iowa Falls; Denny and Judy Hanson of Alden, Iowa; Terry Shane of Dike, Iowa; Carol Shane of Merritt Island, Florida and Regina Shane of Cape Canaveral, Florida; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; he has two step-sons, Lee and Jean Fritts of Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Jack & Linda Fritts of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one step daughter, Norma and Harlan Kamerman of Sioux Center, Iowa; seven step grandchildren and six step great grandchildren; also other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carrie; a sister, Grace Weekley; son-in-law, Harold Wilson; a great-grandson, Burkley Shane.
