Vernon Calvin “Vern” Schemper, the son of John K. and Anne (Ruys) Schemper, was born February 8, 1925 in Prairie View, KS. He moved quite a bit with his parents in his earlier years to Rock Valley and Sioux Center, IA, where he received his education and eventually to the Orange City area where he graduated from the Orange City High School. Vern served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Radiomen 2nd Class, and was discharged from the service in 1946. Vern was united in marriage to Harriet Van Heuvelen on March 14, 1947 in the Newkirk Reformed Church in Newkirk, IA. The couple made their home in Sheldon, where he worked for his brother-in-law, Al Kats at Kats Implement in Sheldon. At the age of 23, he founded O’Brien County Implement in Sheldon.
Vern passed away on Friday, November 28, 2008, at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon, IA, reaching the age of 83 years, 9 months and 20 days.
He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. He was involved in his church and in the community; he served on the Sheldon Christian School Board, the city council and also held the office of Mayor. He and his wife had enjoyed traveling and spending 15 winters in Mesa, Arizona. He loved working at the business and spending time with his grandchildren.
Vern leaves to cherish his memory his four children, Marcia and her husband, Robin Carlock of Dallas, TX; Lee and his wife, Judy Schemper; Tom and his wife, Dianne Schemper and Jay and his wife, Alicia Schemper all of Sheldon, IA; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, Wauneta Schemper of Long Island, KS; Alice Van Heuvelen of Sheldon, IA and Anna and her husband, Rich Den Hartog of Sheldon, IA; two brothers-in-law, Henry and his wife, Alvina Van Heuvelen of Sheldon, IA and Sid Wagenaar of Sheldon, IA; and a special friend, Arvilla Kamstra of Sheldon, IA; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet; his parents, and three brothers and two sisters.
