VERN MAURICE CHALSTROM

Vern Maurice Chalstrom, the son of Albert and Edith (Larson) Chalstrom, was born August 7, 1924 on the family farm in Fulton Township of Webster County, near Moorland, Iowa. He graduated from Moorland Consolidated High School in 1942. After high school he helpedhis dad with the farming and then farmed with his brother, Melvin, after the death of their father in 1945. He was united in marriage to Catherine Areta Bowman on September 19, 1954 in Fort Dodge. The young couple made their home on a farm north of Moorland in Fulton Township, Iowa for 57 years. Vern retired from farming in 1988, but remained active by helping his nephews when needed. Vern and Catherine remained on their home place until 2011, when they moved into Friendship Haven in Ft. Dodge. Vern passed away at Friendship Haven on Tuesday, December 30, 2014reaching the age of 90 years, 4 months and 23 days.
Vern was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational in Moorland and had held various offices on church boards; he was also a member of Farm Bureau. He enjoyed traveling, and loved wood working, especially carving and furniture making. When Vern built their new home, he did all of the finish work, from finishing the kitchen cupboards to all of the wood trim. He also built the majority of their furniture.
Vern leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 60 years, Catherine; nieces and nephews and their spouses, Kenneth & Terry Chalstrom of Webb, Iowa; Bruce Chalstrom of Gillett Grove, Iowa; Lynda Jones of Rockwell City, Iowa; Gordon & Peggy Chalstrom of Moorland, Iowa; Darrell & Marianne Chalstrom of South Bend, Indiana; Byron & Diane Chalstrom of Moorland, Iowa; Elaine & Matt Ascherl of Sheldon, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Claudia & her husband, George Davis of Rockwell City, Iowa; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends and a special friend, Lloyd Intermill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Edith (Larson) Chalstrom; his father and mother-in-law, Austin and Helen Bowman; 2 brothers and their wives, Melvin & LaVonne Chalstrom and Kenneth & Nettie Chalstrom.
