VELMA E. FLICK
Velma Elaine Flick, the daughter of Earl and Elsie (Wienke) Benner was born on April 15, 1923 in Dale Township, near Paullina, Iowa. She attended Primghar School and graduated in 1941 with a Normal Teacher Training Certificate. Her teaching career started in Spirit Lake, Iowa in a one room school house. When World War II began, she returned to Primghar to teach for seven more years. On August 8, 1948 Velma was married to Marlin Flick. To this union three children were born; Linda, Janet and David. They first lived by Sutherland where Marlin was a farm laborer. In 1952, they started farming in the Primghar area. After several moves they made their home three miles east of Primghar. The couple retired from farming in 1991 and bought a house in Primghar. Velma spent her last year in the Primghar Care Center where she passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2013 reaching the age of 90 years, 2 months and 21 days.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Primghar and was active in the women’s circle and taught Sunday school for thirty-five years. Velma’s hobbies included sewing, baking and decorating specialty cakes. She enjoyed many hours in her garden and flower bed. In later years she also enjoyed helping the ladies tie quilts.
Velma is survived by her husband of almost 65 years, Marlin of Primghar; her children, Linda Flick of Woodbury, Minnesota, Janet and her husband, Robert Van Beek of Primghar, Iowa and David and his wife, Tina Flick of Cumming, Georgia; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren: Chad Van Beek, Paul, Erin and Preston Van Beek, Tim, Nichole and Brexton Van Beek and Courtney, Carson and Ryan Flick; one sister, Earline and her husband, Wayne Blahauvietz of Spirit Lake, Iowa; also other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Verna and a brother, Eldred.
