SUSANNA WESTRA
Susanna Westra, the daughter of Harm and Susan (Brink) Oldenkamp was born December 21, 1910 on a farm in rural Sioux County, south of Sheldon, Iowa. She received her education in a country school south of Sheldon. She was united in marriage to Peter Westra on July 19, 1927 in Sioux City, Iowa. After their marriage the couple lived near Boyden, Iowa. They moved to Minnesota for a short while, before moving back to the Sheldon/Boyden area where they farmed until their retirement. They moved into Sheldon in 1974. Her husband preceded her in death on August 31, 1975 and Susanna remained in their home until moving into the Fieldcrest Assisted living in Sheldon in 2004. She has been a resident of the Prairie View Home in Sanborn, since December of 2005. She passed away on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon, reaching the age of 96 years, 10 months and 29 days.
She was a member of the Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon and of Ladies Circle; she was also a member of the Carroll Craft Club. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, ceramics and playing cards with her friends.
She leaves to cherish her memory her six children, Jacob and his wife, Alma Westra of Sheldon; Suzanna Van Kekerix of Sheldon; Bertha Dammann of Arpin, Wisconsin; Hermina and her husband, Daryle Hilbrands of George; Marlowe and his wife, Ing of Tacoma, Washington and Ronald Westra of Tallahassee, Florida; fifteen grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, fifteen-great-great-grandchildren, one step-great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Edith Visser of Sheldon, Iowa and Geraldine Bouma of Omaha, Nebraska; also numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, an infant son, Roger; two great-grandchildren, Reba Trader and Lee Griffith; her parents, five sisters, Jennie Van Es; Tena De Raad; Gertrude Oldenkamp; Christine Lode and Hermina Lode; four brothers, William, Sam, Henry and John Oldenkamp; and two brothers and two sisters in infancy and two-sons-in-laws, Darrell Dammann and Howard Van Kekerix.
