Shirley J. Omer
Shirley Jean Omer, the daughter of Samuel M. and Floy M. (Finchum) Omer was born September 22, 1927 in Sanborn, Iowa. She graduated from Sanborn High School. She made her home in Sanborn until 1956 when she moved to Primghar where her brother-in-law Harold Grafton had purchased the OBrien County Bell and Shirley worked at the Bell. She would become the owner and editor of the paper and operate it for over fifty years. She was also part owner of the Northwest Iowa Publishers. She was very active in the Primghar Community being on the City Council, a director of the Primghar Community Playhouse, Chamber of Commerce, Housing Board, and Community Betterment. Her retirement years were spent in Primghar. She moved to the Prairie View Retirement Home in September of 2008. She passed away at Prairie View on Thursday April 6, 2017 reaching the age of 89 years six months and fourteen days.
She was a member of the United Church of Primghar. She received many awards; Governor Robert Ray Leadership Award, distinguished service award for outstanding contribution to the Iowa Newspaper Industry in 1996 and Master Editor Publisher Award of the Iowa Newspaper Association in 1986. She also enjoyed golfing, bowling and spending time with her family.
Shirley is survived by nieces and nephews; Jeri Trantina of Sanborn, Iowa; Tony (Patricia) Ogden of Waldport, Oregon; Kathy (Ted) Hemmig of Eldorado Hills, California; Dorothy (Rodney) Kroese of Ellsworth, Minnesota; Betty Grafton of Spencer, Iowa; two special friends Angelica Hodgen of Primghar, Iowa and Michael Hodgen of Chicago, Illinois; many great nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Samuel and Floy Omer, sisters and their husbands Thelma and Harold Grafton and Gladys and Verne Ogden, sisters , Phyllis and Dorothy Omer; two nieces Marilyn Cardin and her husband James Cardin and Patty Bethel; two nephews Omer Grafton and Terry Ogden.
