Norton, age 87, of Marcus, formerly of Sutherland who passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus.  His funeral mass will be at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hartley with Father Kevin Richter ~ officiating.

            Burial will be at Prairie View Cemetery

            Visitation with family present will be from 5 – 7 P.M. on Friday, September 15, 2023, at the Eldridge Family Funeral Home in Paullina.

     Peter Eugene Norton was born September 21,1935 in Pittsburgh, California to Robert and Giovanna (Jennie) Aiello Norton. He joined his big brother, Robert (Bobby) and several years later was joined by his baby sister, Anna-Margaretha (Margaret). He was proud to grow up in a close-knit Italian family with a large group of cousins that were as close as siblings. Pete's family moved around the bay area, but he always considered Oakland home. He graduated in 1954 from Richmond High. He started working in the grocery business to help support his mom and sister after his father passed away when he was a teenager.  This was a choice that served him well for 52 years. He worked for several stores and in many roles of the grocery business over the years. His favorite was working in produce. He met the love of his life while working in a grocery store in Oakland. Pete and Patricia Mesner were united in marriage August 16, 1959, in Berkeley, Ca. To this union 3 daughters were born Brenda, Barbara, and Patricia.  Years later a son, David joined the family.  The Iowa girl and California boy moved back and forth a few times over the years with the last move to Iowa in 1991. Their marriage lasted 34 years before ending in divorce. Ultimately, they weren't meant to be apart. After a few short years they got back together. They were together until Pat passed in 2005. These last several years Pete has had some health problems which has moved him to a Nursing home. Always a happy guy with a story to tell. He made the best of it.

     He was well known as a joker and storyteller. He made it his priority to make the employees smile.

     Pete was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Barbi, his brother and

sister, a great granddaughter, and Pat, the love of his life.

     Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Brenda (Mike) Montgomery, Trish (Paul) Isom and son, David Norton. Grandchildren, Chris Montgomery, Becca Van Meeteren, Crystal Bowlsby, Peter Lemmon, Sammie Faulk, Trenton, Keaton, and Jenna McClaren. Sixteen great grandchildren and a large number of extended family and friends.
