Norman Laue was born November 17, 1933, to Harry and Muriel Laue. He was the youngest of 3 children and weighed in at 3.5 lbs. He was so tiny his mother kept him in a shoebox by the stove to keep him warm. He was 18 months old when his mother passed away and their father was helped by Phillip and Julia Anderson and a housekeeper, Rose Waddell. Upon his fathers’ passing, when Norm was 12, they were raised by two dear uncles, Ed, and Albert Laue. He graduated from Paullina High School with the class of 1952. Following high school, he enlisted in the Army where he served as a PFC at Ft. Lewis with a deployment to Alaska.
In 1954 he met his lifelong partner, Dolores, at a dance at the Cobblestone Ballroom in Storm Lake. The next week, on his way to pick her up in Ayrshire his car slid on a slippery road into the ditch, and he walked the remaining distance to her house. He called on Dolores with wet, muddy pants and no shoes and her entire family was there to meet him. The rest is history. On December 27, 1955, he was united in marriage to Dolores Mohr in Ayrshire, IA. Together they lived near Paullina where Norm farmed, and Dolores taught school. Upon retirement, they purchased a house in town. Their marriage was a testament to unfailing love and dedication. They were married 65 years. Of this union were born 3 children: Steve, Joni, and Julie. Our childhoods were full of laughter and adventure, as our dad always had a way of making everything fun. He was always there for us with unwavering love and support every step of our lives. Norm was a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather to his 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren whom he loved and adored. He was there to cheer them on and support them in every activity he could.
Norm was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina, and his faith was very important to him. He served as an elder, a member of Pairs and Spares and was always willing to help with any church projects. Norm never knew a stranger, no matter where he traveled. He could spark up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. He enjoyed coffee uptown with friends, helping others and was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed many fishing trips with Dolores, family, and friends. He enjoyed traveling and took trips to Hawaii, Colorado, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, and Maine. He touched many lives in a positive way.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Dolores; children Steve (Lorie) Laue of Castle Rock, Co; Joni (Paul Weinstock) Manske of Mt. Pleasant, IA; and Julie (Randy) Paulsen of Paullina, IA Grandchildren include Mike Laue, Megan (Kory) Winsor, Tim (Ashley) Paulsen, Mark Manske, Calvin Laue, Jill (Mitchell) Van Otterloo and Adam (Kayla) Paulsen. Loving great-grandchildren include Blaire, Rhett, Dane, Ellie, Reece, Everleigh, Conrad, Lane and Ryklyn. One brother, Keith Laue of Primghar and one sister Marilyn Lundquist of Paullina. Also mourning his passing is a brother -in-law Harley (Ruby) Mohr, and many nieces and nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, parents in law Herbert and Bertha Mohr; his uncles Fred, Delmar, Ed, and Albert Laue; brothers in law Delton Lundquist, Darwin Goodchild, Darrold Mohr, Bob Bowman and sisters in law Viola Laue, Marilyn Bowman, Ruth Ann Goodchild, Ruth Mohr, and Joyce Mohr.
