NELS H. KASTENGREN
Nels Henry Kastengren, the son of Joe and Hulda (Peterson) Kastengren Sr. was born February 6, 1921 at Alta, Iowa. He received his education in a country school. Nels served his country in the United States Army during W.W. II from September 1, 1942 until his discharge on December 30, 1945. On June 30, 1949, he was united in marriage to Margaret Noethe at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. After their marriage the couple farmed near Sutherland, Iowa before moving to Cherokee in 1967. While in Cherokee, Nels was employed at Love Tire Shop and the ALCO Store. The couple retired and moved back to Sutherland. Margaret preceded him in death on October 20, 2007 in Sutherland. Nels continued to make his home in Sutherland and entered the Countryside Estates in Cherokee in December of 2010. He passed away at Countryside on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 reaching the age of 90 years, 1 month and 3 days.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland and the Sutherland American Legion Post #152. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.
Nels leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Patty Patrick of Meriden, Iowa and Mickey and her husband, Doug Boetel of Springdale, Arkansas; nine grandchildren, Becky, Debby, Tim, B.J., Matthew, Patty, Robert, Michael, and Daniel; twenty-two great grandchildren, ten great-great grandchildren, two sisters, Shirley Bengtsson of Longmont, Colorado and Marian and her husband, Brad Tate of Badger, Iowa; two sister-in-laws, Joyce Kastengren of Aurelia, Iowa and Kathryn and her husband, Henry Haht of Sutherland; also other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Carolyn Kay Markelo; a son, Jack and his wife, Carol Kastengren; son-in-law, Larry Patrick; grandson, David Patrick and brothers and sisters.
