NELLIE K. NELS
Nellie Katherine (DeBoer) Nels, the daughter of John and Margaret (TenKley) DeBoer, was born on June 19, 1927 at home on a farm near Rock Valley, Iowa. She lived on the farm in Rock Valley for one year and then moved to the Archer/Sanborn area for the rest of her childhood years.
Nellie attended the Sanborn Christian School for 8 years, Archer High School for 2 years, and 2 years at the Hull Christian School.
Nellie was united in marriage to William Nels of Sheldon, Iowa on February 24, 1948 at the Sheldon Reformed Church. They farmed near Sibley, Iowa for a year, and then farmed southeast of Archer, Iowa for 9 years. They then moved to Santa Barbara, California, where they designed and built homes for 25 years. Bill preceded her in death on June 20, 1999. She remained living at their home until 2003, at which time she became a resident of the Villa Alamar Nursing Home in Santa Barbara, California. She passed away at the nursing home on Sunday, April 24, 2005, reaching the age of 77 years, 10 months and 5 days.
Nellie enjoyed having coffee with her friends and making people laugh. She had a special personality and was a joy to be around. She and her husband loved to travel back to Iowa to visit family. She also enjoyed time in her flower garden and antiquing.
Nellie is survived by her brother and his wife, Maynard and Eunice DeBoer of Archer, Iowa; and brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Gertrude Nels of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Jack and Evelyn Nels and Jeannette and Jake VanHal all of Worthington, Minnesota; Clarence Dykstra of Sheldon, Iowa; Thressa and Gary Meendering of Denver, Colorado. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister-in-law, Gertrude Dykstra and brothers-in-law, Henry and Gary Nels.
