MURIEL “MURDY” J. SMITH
Muriel (Murdy) Townsend Smith was born August 26, 1927 in Ellendale, North Dakota to Ralph and Marjorie Colwell Townsend. She lived in several North and South Dakota towns and moved to Moorhead, Minnesota her junior year in high school. She graduated from Moorhead High School in 1945. She attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota for two years then transferred to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, South Dakota, where she received her B.A. degrees in English and Art in 1949. While there she was active in Pi Beta Phi sorority. While at the University of South Dakota she met Jerome Smith whom she married June 9, 1951. They made their home in Primghar, Iowa, where Jerome was employed at the First National Bank. To this union four children were born.
Murdy was an active member of the United Church of Primghar. She enjoyed her times at the lakes with her neighbors, reading, golfing, and spending time with family and friends. She looked forward to coffee with the girls in the morning and their birthday outings. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren.
Survivors are one son, Jay Smith of Primghar and three daughters, Jeri Allgood of Nebraska City, Nebraska; Nancy and Jay Staines of Okoboji, Iowa and Jean and Dale Fulk of Sanborn, Iowa; and eight grandchildren, Kelly and Paul Davis, Carey and Kacie Allgood of Nebraska City, Nebraska; Samantha Staines of Okoboji, Iowa; Nikki and Ben Arentson of Gretna, Nebraska; and Kristi, Lindsi, and Mitchel Fulk of Sanborn, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, one sister, Bonnie and Ray Crawford of Rockford, Minnesota; and one brother, Jim Townsend of Aspen, Colorado; also several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband who passed away September 18, 1999.
