MILDRED “MILLIE” MERLEY
Mildred “Millie” Merley, the daughter of Peter and Bertha (Van Den Berg) De Graaf, was born December 23, 1918 in Newkirk, Iowa. She received her education in Newkirk and graduated from Newkirk High School. She was united in marriage to John Rockford Merley on December 23, 1938 at Newkirk, Iowa. After their marriage the couple farmed in the Hartley and Archer area for several years. The couple moved into Sheldon in February of 1962. For 13 years Millie was employed at the Sheldon Nursing Home as a nurse’s aid. Her husband passed away on May 8, 2006 in Sheldon. Millie became a resident of the Northwest Iowa Health Center – Senior Care in May of 2006. She passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at the Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa, reaching the age of 88 years, 2 months and 13 days.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sheldon. Her family was very important to her.
Millie leaves to cherish her memory, a son, Don and his wife, Barb Merley of Sheldon, Iowa; a daughter, Vicki Merley of Sheldon, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Merley of Sheldon, Iowa; eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, Gertrude Merley and Bonnie Merley both of Sheldon, Iowa; Olivia De Graaf of Orange City, Iowa; also many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; two sons, Billy Dean and Paul Merley, her parents, six brothers and sisters.
