     Melvin Brands, age 88, of Sanborn, Iowa and formerly of Sheldon and Boyden, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at the Prairie View Home in Sanborn, Iowa. His Funeral Service will be at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon, Iowa with Pastor John Jensen ~ officiating.

     Burial will be in the Sheridan Township Cemetery in Boyden, Iowa

     Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, September 3o, 2024 at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon

Arrangements are under the care of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

 Melvin Brands, the son of John and Gertie (Otten) Brands was born August 1, 1936, in Rock Valley, Iowa. He attended a country school near Rock Valley, Iowa. On May 22, 1956, he was united in marriage to Alyce Hoogland in Sioux Center, Iowa. The young couple made their home in the NW Iowa area and in 1970 moving to Boyden, Iowa. Melvin was employed with Farmers Feed & Supply Co. in Boyden as a truck driver for over 20 years. Alyce preceded him in death on May 13, 2002 in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Melvin moved into Sheldon in October later that same year. In October of 2021, Melvin became a resident of Prairie View Home in Sanborn, Iowa where he passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 reaching the age of 88 years, 1 month and 24 days.

 Melvin was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon, a former member of the Sheldon Eagle’s Club. He enjoyed puzzles, Wheel of Fortune, gardening, Bingo, the Chicago Cubs, the Minnesota Twins, his son got him hooked on the Oklahoma Sooners. And he especially enjoyed his family and grandchildren.

 Left to cherish his memories are his 2 daughters, Joleen and Randy Baumgarn of Sanborn; Emily Brands Hanno of Fulda, Minnesota; a daughter-in-law, Bethany and Derik Lampe of Spirit Lake, Iowa; 8 grandchildren, Brenda Brands, Monica (Cory) Murray, Steph (Sean) Wolf, Michelle (Brian) Groeneweg, Shannon Minton, Meredith Carter (Bill Arends), Brevin (Brieannah) Brands, Brianna Brands; 12 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, a brother, Albert and Alice Brands of Mesa, Arizona; and other relatives and friends.

 He is preceded in death by his wife, Alyce of 45 years; his parents, a daughter, Kris Minton, a son, Ed Brands; a grandson Mike Brands; and 3 brothers, Garrett and Bertha Brands; Bill and Effie Brands and Everett Brands.
