Mary Ann Kuehl, 94, of Calumet, Iowa, passed away on August 10th, 2023.
Mary Ann, the daughter of Emil and Elsie (Langholz) Koch, was born on February 9, 1929, in O’Brien County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Paullina, Iowa. She received her education in various schools and graduated from Larabee High School in 1948. On March 3, 1949, she was united in marriage to Donald “Donnie” Kuehl at the parsonage in Calumet. After their marriage, they worked and lived on two different farms until March of 1956, when they moved to the farm of Helen Reimers, just south of Calumet, where they farmed until 1992. Mary Ann remained on the farm until 2017.
In 1950, Mary Ann became a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet. She was an active member of the Women’s Fellowship and supported the church community as president and secretary for many years; she was also the first woman to serve as a church councilmember. She took joy in cooking, baking, working in the garden, and helping her husband with the fieldwork on the farm. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed taking trips and having dinners with the ladies. As Mary Ann and Donnie’s family grew, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary Ann’s beloved husband Donald passed away in October, 2012. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Emil and Elsie (Langholz) Koch; her mothers-in-law, Irene Hoppe and Helen Reimers; her sister, Dorothy Carlson Fisher; her brothers-in-law Arnold Carlson and Marlin Fisher; her brother-in-law Merle Kuehl; her sisters-in-law, Gerda Kuehl and Dorothy Koch; her nephew, Dennis Carlson; her niece, Debbie Carlson Orthmann; and her great granddaughter, Trista Kay Heitritter.
Mary Ann is survived by her children, Lanna Kay Kuehl of Paullina, Iowa; Nancy Ann Kuehl of Sutherland, Iowa; Jeffery Lynn (Becky) Kuehl of Sanborn, Iowa; Gary Lee (Sherry) Kuehl of Hartley, Iowa; and Helen Kuehl of Hartley, Iowa. Also left to cherish her memory are her brother, Donald Koch of New Haven, Kentucky; her grandchildren Kody (Jessica) Kuehl; Lexie Kuehl; Kelly (Dan) Lange; Dustin Kuehl; Hunter Kuehl; Marie (Aaron) Glackin; and Thomas (Kylee) Glackin; her five great grandchildren Ayslyn, Skye, Charlotte, Kyren, and Atlee; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
