MARJORIE E. WILLMS-SCHOLTEN
Marjorie Evelyn Willms-Scholten was born May 5, 1927 to Harry Miles and Mary Thomas (Briggle) Green in Alcester, South Dakota. She attended school and graduated from Alcester High School as Valedictorian. After high school she trained to become an airline reservations clerk in Minneapolis, MN, but when her first job assignment was in Pennsylvania, her parents encouraged her to stay closer to home. She then became a telephone operator in Sioux Falls, SD. During which time, she met and married Howard Willms. They were married at Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester, SD on March 1, 1948. They had two daughters, Susan (1949) and Marilee (1955). After farming in South Dakota for several years, the family moved to Mason City, IA, then Spencer, IA and finally to Sheldon, IA. Margie raised her family and also worked in retail and did home daycare. While in Sheldon, she and her husband, Howard started the Farm Fleet Store, C&H Supply with partner Charles Andringa. They operated the store for thirty years until Howard’s death on October 21, 1993 in Sioux City, IA. Margie then married Victor L. Scholten of Sheldon on October 11, 1997. They enjoyed traveling, participating in American Legion activities and church activities and attending family events. After several years of declining health, Marjorie passed away at Sanford Sheldon Hospital in Sheldon, Iowa on Saturday, December 31, 2011, reaching the age of 84 years, 7 months and 26 days.
She was a life-long church member, starting as a member of the Congregational Church and then becoming a Lutheran. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon, where she often served as the president of the Esther Circle as well as the women of the church. Margie was a compassionate woman who offered friendship and kindness to many. Her generosity and support throughout the years to relatives and friends was greatly appreciated. She was a natural leader and an independent thinker. She and Howard valued education and encouraged their daughters to go to college to pursue careers. Both became teachers.
Margie leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Victor L. Scholten of Sheldon; her two daughters, Susan Cantine-Maxson and her husband, Robert Maxson of Concordia, KS and Marilee Schmalen of Sheldon, IA; five grandchildren, Andrew & (Kasey) Cantine of Iowa City, IA; Aaron & (Jenni) Cantine of Minneapolis, MN; Annette (Schmalen) & (Chris) Welday-Zimney of Spring, TX; Nick & (Jessica) Schmalen of Sibley, IA; and Mike Schmalen of Minneapolis, MN.
