            Marie C. Pomerenke, age 87, of Sheldon, Iowa passed away on Monday, September 25, 2023, at Vista Prairie at Fieldcrest in Sheldon, Iowa.  Her celebration of life will be 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at Faith Community Church in Sheldon with Pastor Dale Lint ~ officiating.

            Burial was held at Gilman Township Cemetery on Saturday, September 30, 2023.

 Arrangements are under the care of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Marie Colleen Pomerenke, the daughter of John “Jack” and Sylvia (Miers) Kannegieter was born on December 30, 1935, in her parent’s home on the farm, 5 miles west of Ashton, Iowa.  She attended country school and graduated from Ashton High School.  She married her high school sweetheart to Robert (Bob) Pomerenke August 28, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.  She and Bob then lived on the farm where she was born until Bob’s death in March of 1994.  She then moved to Sheldon and later moved into Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon in April of 2022.  She passed away at Fieldcrest on Monday, September 25, 2023 at the age of 87 years.

Marie was a long-term member and elder at First Presbyterian Church in Ashton until transferring her membership to United Methodist Church (now Faith Community Church) in Sheldon.  She was active in circles of both churches and she and Bob were members of the Mariner’s group in Ashton.

Marie’s first love was her family and she cherished them the most.  She was an excellent cook and baker and always made sure that visitors to her home had a meal and a hot cup of coffee!  She enjoyed playing cards, coffee with friends, reading, and watching Molly B on Saturday nights.  She and Bob loved going dancing in their younger years and both especially loved listening to and going to Elvis concerts.  She will be remembered for her humble spirit and heart of hospitality.  She was a kind lady who had enormous gratitude for those that helped her and valued family and friendship more than things being one who did not build treasurers on earth.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Kelly (Teresa) Pomerenke of Sioux Center, Iowa and Shane Pomerenke of Ashton, Iowa; grandchildren, Aaron (Alicia) Pomerenke of Northlake, Texas, Jason Pomerenke of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Brittany Pomerenke of Ankeny, Iowa and Brayden Pomerenke of Ashton, Iowa; brother and sister-in-law, LaVerle (Cork) and Joan Pomerenke of Milford, Iowa, friend, Jan Verrips of Okoboji, Iowa, many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Bob’s parents, Henry and Viola Pomerenke; brother, John Jr. (Marje) Kannegieter, brothers and sisters-in-law, Donna (John) Kamies, Dennis Pomerenke, Jerry Pomerenke; nieces, Michelle Pomerenke, Denice Kannegieter; nephews, Steve Pomerenke and Bruce Kannegieter.
