           Services for Marcene G. Cox, age 72, of Boyden who passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  Her celebration of life will be at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, November 11, 2022, at Church of the Brethren in Sheldon with Pastor David E. Loveall, officiating.

            Private family burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Matlock.

            Visitation with family present will be from 5 – 7 P.M. on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Boyden.

    Marcene G. Cox, the daughter of Rodger Raymond and Thelma (DeGoey) Boertje was born on May 17, 1950, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.  She graduated from Prairie City Community School in 1968.  After graduating, she attended Northwestern College in Orange City where she played basketball and graduated in 1972 with her bachelor’s in education.  She started working at Boyden Elementary School in 1972 and worked there until her retirement in 1998.  Marcene was united in marriage to Alan Cox on August 9, 1974, at the First Reformed Church in Prairie City, Iowa.  After her retirement, she was a substitute teacher in several area schools.  Marcene passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, reaching the age of 72 years, 5 months, and 18 days.

      Marcene was a member of the Church of the Brethren, where she played piano for several years and was treasurer.  She was a member of the Sheldon Civic Music Association and the Boyden Belles Red Hat Society.  She enjoyed reading, collecting antiques, playing games, her cat, Gateway and spending time with her nephews and great nieces and nephews.  Marcene also enjoyed spending time at her lake home at Okoboji and going to flea markets.          

     Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Alan Cox of Boyden; brothers-in-law, Ross (Sandi) Cox and Robert Westra; nephews, Jed (Natalie) Cox and Jared (Sara) Cox and their families; several aunts and uncles and, other relatives and friends.

     Marcene was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Cheryl Westra, great nephew, Mason Cox and several aunts and uncles.
