MADGE “MICKIE” VAN LEEUWEN
Madge “Mickie” Van Leeuwen, the daughter of A.I. and Ruth (Elliott) Coons was born January 1, 1915 in Ireton, Iowa. She attended country school and Ireton High School to the 10th grade. On January 2, 1936, she was united in marriage to Herman Van Leeuwen in Rolfe, Iowa. After their marriage the couple settled in Orange City, Iowa before moving to Primghar in 1946. For many years the couple operated Herm’s Welding and Machine Shop and Mickie assisted her husband in the operation of the shop. In 1986, the couple were blessed by celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Herman preceded her in death on October 26, 1986 in Primghar. She remained in Primghar and on April 6, 2006, she became a resident of the Primghar Care Center. She passed away at the care center on Saturday, February 20, 2010 reaching the age of 95 years, 1 month and 19 days.
She was a member of the American Reformed Church in Primghar, where she had taught Sunday School. She was active in the Primghar community by being a member of the Primghar Women’s Club, secretary in the Girl Scouts and was a life-time member of the Baum-Harmon Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, oil painting, traveling, cooking, camping, gardening and watching baseball especially the Chicago Cubs. For 20 years, she and Herman wintered in Arizona and California. Writing poetry was one of her favorite things to do, and in 1961 she had her poetry book, Mere Murmuring printed.
Mickie is survived by her sister, Joyce Thompson of Primghar and a sister-in-law, Eleanor Coons of Sioux Rapids; also nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, her parents, three brothers, Leo, Russell, Donald; four sisters, Blanche, Lois, Gertrude and Millie; and one nephew, Eugene Coons.
