LEROY “ROY” H. MURPHY
LeRoy “Roy” H. Murphy, the son of Daniel and Ella (Wilson) Murphy was born August 7, 1923 at Matlock, Iowa. He attended Sheldon schools and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1941. He served his country during W.W. II serving in the Army being discharged in 1946. He was united in marriage to Loretta Jochum on June 3, 1948 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, Iowa. After their marriage the couple lived in Sheldon where in 1948, he established the Army-Navy Surplus Store, which was later renamed the Murphy Shoe and Clothing Store. In 1966, he began the Fritts and Murphy Real Estate. He sold the store in 1982 and continued to sell real estate until December 31, 2008 when he retired. He passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, reaching the age of 85 years, 6 months and 14 days
He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Sheldon Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and V.F.W. Posts of Sheldon. He had served on the Sheldon City Council, was a founding member of the Northwest Iowa Board of Realtors and was the longest standing member of the Sheldon Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family and fishing.
Roy is survived by his wife of 60 years, Loretta of Sheldon; children, Patrick Murphy of Des Moines; Dr. Dennis and his wife, Beverly Murphy of Hutchinson, Minnesota; Dr. Thomas and his wife, Peg Murphy of Plymouth, Minnesota; Jerry and his wife, Sue Murphy of Ankeny and Sheila and her husband, Bill Horton of Burnsville, Minnesota; 12 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Maxine Gintert and Ruth Elliott both of LeMars, Iowa and Dorothy Wright of Iowa Falls, Iowa; also nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Murphy; his parents, one brother, Les Murphy and a sister, Helen Haakinson.
