LEO J. STARKENBURG
Leo John Starkenburg, was born December 3, 1933 to John and Lydia (Van Otterloo) Starkenburg in Alton, Iowa. He grew up in Alton and graduated from the Alton public school. Leo married Joanne (TeSlaa) on June 3, 1955. Leo and Joanne moved to Lawton, Oklahoma from 1955-1957 where Leo served in the Army. Upon Leos discharge from the Army, they moved back to Boyden where they lived for the next 25 years, until Joannes passing in April 28th, 1980. In March 1981, Leo married Lucia Tomkins. They continued living and working in Boyden until Lucias passing on July 6th, 1997. Leo was employed by Van Ommeran Construction, until he started his own Starkenburg Construction in 1966. Leo built many beautiful homes in the Boyden and surrounding areas. In 1990, Leo began working as custodian and a bus driver for the Boyden-Hull Community Schools. Leo enjoyed seeing the kids on his bus every day and loved handing out many tootsie rolls.
Leo was a very active member of the Boyden Reformed Church. He served as an Elder, a Deacon, taught Sunday School and enjoyed singing with the choir and the Sr. Saints. Leos interests and hobbies included woodworking, antiquing, playing cards and model trains. Leo loved spending time with his family and enjoyed going to all their activities. He loved being the family Jokester!
In 2006, Leo moved to Fieldcrest in Sheldon. He loved living there and was very active helping the staff with many activities that included devotions, mens group, Bingo & morning fitness with Judy! He enjoyed the residents & Staff at Fieldcrest and referred to it as his HOME
Left to cherish his memory are.Larry (Cloe) Starkenburg, Julie (Rod) Radcliffe, Les (Carla) Starkenburg, Loren (Michele) Starkenburg, Lisa Tomkins, Lorelei (Bart) Carey, Glenn (Stacie) Tomkins and Trevor (Michelle) Tomkins; 19 Grandchildren, 7 Great-Grandchildren.
Brother & sister-in-law, Cliff and Dee TeSlaa; brother-in-law, Ronnie Klein, and numerous nieces & nephews.
Leo was preceded in death by his wives, Joanne his parents, John and Lydia Starkenburg; brother, Cyrene; sister, Angie and brother-in-law, Arnie Van Es and sister, Lois Klein.
