LAVERNE C. NIEBUHR
LaVerne Clara Niebuhr, youngest child of William and Clara Richter Meyer was born on October 17, 1926, on the family farm in Germantown, Iowa. She was baptized, October 31, 1926, at St. John Lutheran Church, Germantown, Iowa. She attended St. John Lutheran School and was confirmed, May 5, 1940, and graduated from Paullina High School in 1944.
She was united in marriage to Wesley W. Niebuhr on January 6, 1946, at St. John Lutheran Church. They started farming west of Paullina and retired on the farm in the fall of 1989. The summer of 1996 found them moving into Paullina. Wesley preceded her in death on August 16, 2003.
LaVerne’s passions in life were her family, farming, dancing, playing cards and the traveling she was able to do with Wes and friends. She enjoyed greatly when the grandchildren would come to the farm and their home in Paullina and spend time with them. She was active in the community with tying quilts, making Braille books, enjoyed dancing, and playing cards with friends.
In July 2020 she moved into Prairie View Healthcare Center in Sanborn, Iowa. She participated in the activities and enjoyed visiting with the other residents. We are very grateful for the loving care she received at Prairie View. She loved it there and appreciated all the staff.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and had served as both historian and vice president of Zion Ladies Aid.
Left to cherish LaVerne’s memory are her daughter, Linda Mickalowski of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, daughter-in-law, Leann Niebuhr (special friend, Chuck Sherman) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, daughter-in-law, Elaine Niebuhr of Canton, South Dakota, and son-in-law, Richard (Jan) Fonder of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Great grandchildren, Liesl, Owen and Eloise Cops, Oslo Niebuhr, Sam, Nate, Violet and William Houglum, Harper and Iver Fonder, Zoe Niebuhr, Simon Mickalowski, and her 13th great grandchild is expected to arrive in March to Kyle and Kate. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley, her sons, David and Larry and her daughter, Diane Fonder, her parents, four sisters, Irene Meyer, Esther Binder, LuElla Brownmiller, Wilma Warneke, and three brothers, Ray, Lorenz, and Orville Meyer.
