Kenneth Burdell Orthmann, age 97, went Home to his Savior on July 2nd at Prairie View Home. Ken was born on the family farm north of Sutherland on May 28,1927, the third of five generations to live and farm there. Ken served in the Navy following his high school graduation in 1945 and he considered it a great privilege to participate in the Brushy Creek WWII Veteran’s Honor Flight in 2017. After his retirement (as much as any good farmer ever retires) he moved to town in 1986. Ken was active in the Sutherland United Methodist Church, serving in every possible role including mission work trips. He was recently awarded a citation by the office of the bishop for his 60 years as church treasurer. He served also on the elevator board, the conservation board and was active in the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and was a charter member of the Ruritan Club.

“Whatever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might” could have been his life motto. He farmed with diligence and excellence and then after livin’, learnin’ and plantin’ Pioneer for many years he applied that motto to sellin’ it. Ken enjoyed fishing and was known to ask Beverly to switch sides with him if she was in a “sweet spot”. He spent hours watching his grands in their activities, cheering on the Hawkeyes with his dear friend, Jackie Waggoner, and enjoying a good game of 500 with friends at the Willoway.

Ken was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Beverly (Bryant); his parents, Ed and Nellie; a brother, Bob; two sisters, Barbara Thiessen and Margie Jacobs; and a daughter-in-law, Deborah. Left to cherish his precious memory are four children, Joel (Andrea), Lee Ann (Dave), Randy (Lydia), and David; fifteen grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren; as well as host of extended family and friends.

A stranger once walked up to Ken and said, “I heard you’re the guy who goes to people’s houses and does stuff for them for free”. And of course, Ken was that guy. Kindness is a word often used but seldom lived truly and authentically. We claim that word for our dad. He was the gold standard of generosity and we were profoundly blessed to share his life.

We will celebrate that life on Monday, July 8th at Sutherland United Methodist Church with a visitation at 10:00, the service at 11:00 and a luncheon immediately after across the street at the Church of Christ fellowship hall.
