JOHN H. POPPEMA
John Henry Poppema, the son of William and Nettie (Westerman) Poppema, was born April 24, 1933 on a farm near Hospers, IA. He received his early education in rural schools near Hospers and Ashton, IA and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1951. After high school he worked as a farmhand before going into the United States Army in 1953 until his discharge in 1955, he was stationed in Germany. After his discharge from the service he returned to the Ashton area and worked as a farmhand. On August 8, 1956, he was united in marriage to Eleanor L. Nieuwendorp in Sheldon, Iowa. The young couple made their home on a farm near Ashton until 1961. They then moved to Sheldon, where John had worked for the Big 4, Felco and Land-O-Lakes before retiring in 1995. John became a resident of the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, Iowa in April of 2008. He passed away at Prairie View on Friday, August 1, 2008, reaching the age of 75 years, 3 months and 8 days.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sheldon and a past member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening talking about cars and politics, he also enjoyed going to the Black Hills.
John is survived by his six children, Douglas and his wife, Joanne Poppema of Eau Claire, WI; Deb Kolbeck and her special friend, Ron Penning of Boyden, IA; Daryl and his wife, Anita Poppema of Archer, IA; Darwin and his wife, Joy Poppema of Orange City, IA; Diane and her husband, Frank Schnider Jr. of Sheldon, IA; David Poppema of St. Paul, MN; eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a sister and her husband, Henrietta and Gene Den Hartog of Sheldon, IA; a brother and his wife, Rodney and Sandy Poppema of Worthington, MN; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant grandson.
