Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon, with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., a Scripture wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m., and a parish rosary at 7:30 p.m.

JOHN E. ANDERSON


John Ervie Anderson, the son of Ervie and Lillian (McDonald) Anderson was born October 7, 1918 in Verndale, Minnesota. As a child he moved with his parents to Iowa, where he received some of his formal education in the communities of Archer and Little Rock, he then moved with his parents to Oregon and continued his education. John started working at an early age; he drove heavy equipment for ranchers and eventually joined the “3 C’s” Civil Conservation Corp where he was shipped to fight forest fires. On August 6, 1941, he was united in marriage to Margaret “Marge” Strouth in Sibley, Iowa. After their marriage the couple moved to California. John serviced in the United States Navy Seabees during World War II from 1942 - 1945. After his discharge from the Navy they moved to Sheldon, Iowa. John owned and operated the Anderson Machine Shop in Archer for 13 years; he eventually moved the business to Sheldon and retired in 1981, after 63 years in business. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marge on August 30, 1994. John continued to live in Sheldon until he passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center – Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa reaching the age of 90 years, 10 months and 29 days.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Sheldon; he was a 63 year member of the McGlothlen-Cowie Post #145 of the American Legion of Sheldon, he was also a member of the Sheldon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7354 and the Eagles Club in Sheldon. John enjoyed traveling, fishing, woodworking and he just plain enjoyed working. He also enjoyed visiting and spending time with his family.
John is survived by his two children, Sherry and her husband, Dennis Daniels of St. Michaels, Minnesota and Bill and his wife, Ilona Anderson of Edmonds, Washington; seven grandchildren, Todd Daniels; Dr’s. Terry and Dawn Daniels; Tami and Lincoln Boe; Tracy and Matt Stender; Kari Underwood, Jason Anderson; Cassi Anderson; and a special friend, Lee Honkomp of Sheldon, Iowa and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marge; a son, Terryl; his parents; a brother in infancy; and two sisters, Florence Koepnick and Sylvia De Kok.
