Joan Leora Bruns, the daughter of William and Alida (Van Bruggen) Nieuwendorp, was born January 15, 1935 in Sheldon, Iowa. She was raised on a farm near Matlock, where she attended country school and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1952. After high school she worked for the Golden Rule until her marriage to Marion Leland Reimers on January 19, 1956 in Boyden, Iowa. After their marriage the young couple lived in the Boyden area and Joan worked as a salesclerk for Hollander’s Five & Dime and Pamida in Sheldon and also worked at the Boyden Bowl and Café. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion on January 25, 1988 and Joan remained in the family home in Boyden. On August 18, 1990, she was united in marriage to Richard R. Bruns in Germantown, Iowa and the couple lived in Boyden. Joan worked at K-Products in Orange City, until her retirement in 1993. In 1994, they moved to an acreage near Paullina, Iowa. Joan passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2005, at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, Iowa, reaching the age of 70 years, 8 months and 16 days.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown and a past member of the United Presbyterian Church in Boyden, Iowa. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and crossword puzzles.
Joan leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Richard of rural Paullina, IA; her three children, Gary Reimers of Honolulu, HI; Susan and her husband, Darwin Huls of Boyden, IA; Michael and his wife, Tina Reimers of Brownfield, ME; 7 step-children, Bernie and his wife, Mary, Bruns of Paullina, IA; Cindy and her husband, Kenny Rabel of Aurora, CO; Randy and his wife, Elizabeth Bruns of Sheldon, IA; Lori and her husband, Brian Breitbarth of Hilo, HI; Richard Bruns Jr. of Paullina, IA; Patricia and her husband, Gary Morenz of Newell, IA; Gerry and her husband Jody Rickers of Mason City, IA; five grandchildren, Andreah and her husband, Kevin Maassen; Amanda and Jonathan Huls; Austin Reimers and Sean Reimers; 19 step-grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren, Darin and Kali Maassen; and 2 step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by 3 sisters, Eleanor Poppema of Sheldon, IA; Wilma and her husband, Jim Blankespoor of Doon, IA; Marilyn and her husband, Henrich Kraayenbrink of Sioux Center, IA; and a brother and his wife, William and Marge Nieuwendorp Jr. of Matlock, IA; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Marion L. Reimers; a grandson, Michael Huls.
