JEANNE P. CHARLTON
Jeanne Peterson Charlton, the daughter of E.T. and Mary (Williams) Peterson, was born October 5, 1927 in Missoula, Montana. She moved with her family to Primghar and received her education from the Primghar schools, graduating from Primghar High School in 1945. She went on to attend and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1949 and returned to Primghar to teach one semester at Primghar High School. She attended the University of New Hampshire to work on her Masters degree, where she met her future husband, Arnie Charlton. Jeanne and Arnie were married on September 5, 1955 at Okoboji, Iowa. After their marriage the couple returned to the University of New Hampshire and from 1956 to 1958, they lived in El Paso, Texas, while her husband was in the Army. The couple moved to Primghar in 1958, where her husband worked with Jeanne’s father, E.T. Peterson in the family owned Primghar Savings Bank. Jeanne was involved in many Primghar community activities. She served for many years on the Primghar Public Library Board; was one of the founders of the Primghar Community Playhouse and was active in the Primghar Women’s Club, having served in a state office. While in this office, she was involved in getting the Friends Program, which is a statewide program in getting children help in reading. Her husband preceded her in death on May 26, 2004 in Primghar and in May of 2004, she became a resident of the Primghar Care Center. She passed away at the care center on Thursday, June 7, 2007, reaching the age of 79 years, 8 months and 2 days.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandson, Matt. She also enjoyed reading, talking politics and traveling.
Jeanne leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters, Kathy Charlton of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Lynn and her husband, Steve Cole of Primghar; a grandson, Matt Cole of Primghar; a brother-in-law, Bruce Leonard of Cleveland, Ohio; two nieces, Patricia and her husband, Robert Fessenden and Diane Scott; also other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister, Laura Leonard.
