JANETTE FONKERT
Janette Fonkert, the daughter of Harm and Carrie (Hilbrands) Harms, was born March 16, 1915 on a farm near George, Iowa. She received her education in George. On April 4, 1936, she was united in marriage to Peter Fonkert Jr. and the young couple made their home in Sheldon. Janette and Peter managed the Sheldon Golf Course for awhile and she also took in ironing. She was instrumental in starting the Northwest Iowa Retarded Children’s Association in Sheldon, which became the Work Activities Center and which evolved into the Northwest Iowa Enterprises. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter on June 8, 2005 in Sheldon, Iowa. Janette passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at the Sanford Medical Center – Senior Care in Sheldon, reaching the age of 93 years, 1 months and 20 days.
Janette was a very active charter member of the Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon where she had taught the 3 year old Sunday School Class for 39 years and most of all she enjoyed her family.
Janette leaves to cherish her memory her five children, Carol Hoppe of Doon, Iowa; Peter H. Fonkert of Fruitport, Michigan; Betty Ferrell of Orange City, Iowa; Rodney Fonkert and his wife, Bonnie of Sheldon, Iowa; David Fonkert of Lawrence, Kansas; thirteen grandchildren, Pam Fredin; Doug and Don Hoppe; Kevin and Tim Fonkert; Deb Post; Rhonda Weisbrod; Randy Fonkert; Rebecca DeWild; Jim Ferrell; Sherry DeHaan; David and Michael Fonkert; 25 great-grandchildren, a sister, Harriet Skoge of Omaha, Nebraska; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Leroy Fonkert; a son-in-law, Eugene Hoppe; three brothers, Wesley, Art, Clifford; and a sister, Thelma.
