JACK I. HUNNEL
Jack I. Hunnel, the son of George Irvin and Olive Mae (Brady) Hunnel was born February 16, 1930 in Sioux City, Iowa. He was raised and lived most of his life in Sioux City, graduating from Central High School in 1948. During his earlier years, Jack worked for the Bupane Gas Company, where he was a delivery/serviceman and worked his way up to be the manager of the Sioux City Store. He then worked for the ADT Company, starting as a guard and then being promoted to Day Supervisor. He was accepted as a police officer with the Sioux City Police Department in January of 1961. He was assigned to the Traffic Bureau. Being interested in the safety and assistance to the citizens of Sioux City, he had the opportunity to instruct the school patrol students and the parochial school students. Jack was named policeman of the year in February of 1968. He attended the University of Minnesota, the Traffic Institute in Evanston, Illinois and Morningside College. He worked in the Traffic Identification Bureau, Uniform Division and was promoted to Sergeant, then being assigned to the Detective Bureau and was then later the 11:00pm to 7:00am Shift Sergeant. He retired from the Police Department in September of 1978. He was united in marriage to Iris Koch and for the last several years the couple made their home in Paullina. He passed away at the Paullina Care Center on Tuesday, February 7, 2006, reaching the age of 75 years, 11 months and 21 days.
He was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet. During his life time he was concerned about church and was very instrumental in the construction and operation of the Greenville Evangelical Free Church and was a Sunday School Superintendent for several years. He was a member of the Sioux City Policeman’s Association, Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and the Iowa Policeman’s Association. He enjoyed camping, hunting, golfing and the outdoors.
Left to cherish his memory, is his wife, Iris of Paullina; two sons, George L. and his wife, Debbie Hunnel of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Gary I. and his wife, Dannette Hunnel of Phoenix, Arizona; a daughter, Jaclyn and her husband, Dr. Keith Vollstedt of Sioux City, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Susan Hunnel of Sioux City, Iowa; a step-son, Steve and his wife, Marla Koch of Ankeny, Iowa; a step-daughter, Kim and her husband, Kevin Walsh of Alta, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a sister, Joyce E. and her husband, Carleton Buck of Rogers, Arkansas; also other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Connie Ellen; a son, Glenn E. Hunnel and his parents.
