IRENE LUCILE KLINK
Irene, the daughter of Early Lee and Elsie Clara (Wall) Durst, was born June 22, 1920, in Highland Township, O’Brien County, Iowa. She attended the Gaza Consolidated School, graduating from high school in 1938. On December 1, 1939, she was united in marriage to Harold J. Klink at the Congregational Church parsonage in Clarion, Iowa. Irene joined Harold on the family farm in Dale Township, where they became the 3rd generation of Klinks to tend the land. They named it “Primdale Farm” and spent the next 30 years raising crops, livestock, and a family – three sons, (Karl, Robert, Kelvin) and two daughters, (Linda, Mary). Irene was an attentive mother, devoted wife, outstanding housekeeper and manager of keeping all activities of a busy farm and family functioning. Known as a wonderful cook and baker, she was extremely capable of feeding large groups of neighboring farmers who would gather to help with thrashing or hay baling parties.
Irene was involved in church, band boosters, ladies aid, Rose Dale Club, 4-H and the American Cancer Society. Irene enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening; canning or freezing her produce; baking breads of all sorts; preparing meals, desserts, entertaining, visiting and playing cards with friends. She particularly liked going on fishing trips and spending time with family. She was not happy unless she was busy. One would seldom find her lounging.
The couple retired from farming in 1969 and subsequently lived in Primghar, Spirit Lake and back again to Primghar. Throughout this time, they enjoyed traveling frequently throughout the US, Alaska, Canada and Mexico in their motor home. They also took extended trips via car, train and cruises to Alaska and Europe.
Irene enjoyed spending many winters in Mesa, Arizona with Harold until spring 2003. She developed cherished friendships with fellow snowbirds from around the country and was the originator of “The O’Brien County Breakfast”. Irene continued going to Mesa subsequent winters to enjoy the warmer weather and friendships through the spring of 2007. She lived in Primghar until fall, 2007. Her remaining years were spent in a loving environment at the Community Care Center in Stuart, Iowa, where daughter, Linda (and family) could be close at hand.
There were no ‘strangers’ around Irene, as she made a point to strike up a conversation with everyone who crossed her path. Most often this first gesture of friendship was followed by an invitation into her home for coffee and some of her readily available delicious baked goods. These new friends from near and far would visit their home, and likewise, Harold and Irene would make a point to stop to see their array of friends and family members during the many trips they made throughout the USA. Her ready laugh and cheerful hello will be missed by many.
Irene passed away November 24, 2010, reaching the age of 90 years, 5 months and 2 days. Irene leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Linda (Terry) Wall of Panora, IA, and Mary Nicholson of Okoboji, IA; two sons, Robert (Patricia) Klink of Federal Way, WA, and Kelvin (Patti) Klink of Bellevue, WA; also daughter-in-law, Marlene Kink of Primghar; as well as eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Harold Klink; a son, Karl Klink; grandchildren, Charles Klink and Kelli Catherine Klink; her parents, and brothers, Densel Durst, Derrell Durst, and Donald Durst.
