HENRIETTA KORTHALS
Henrietta Bos Korthals, age 96, passed away on October 16, 2013, at Sheldon Sanford Health. Henrietta was born on April 29, 1917, to AJ & Harmtje (Boer) Bos in Sheldon, IA. She grew up on a farm and went to country school in Steen, MN. Henrietta and her eight sisters and two brothers created many memories growing up together. Henrietta recalled picking corn by hand and getting into mischief with her sisters.
On February 27, 1941, Henrietta married Gerrit Korthals on a farm near George, IA. The two met on some of the many trips that Henrietta’s father made to George on Saturday nights to get groceries. Together, Henrietta and Gerrit had five children.
In her younger years, Henrietta worked by cleaning houses for others. After she married Gerrit, she retired from cleaning other’s homes and began the very busy job of being a farmer’s wife. In her spare time, Henrietta enjoyed sewing, fishing, gardening, cooking, and singing with the Senior Saints. Henrietta also remembers the many trips she and Gerrit took. They have visited California, Florida, Hawaii and even Holland. She said she liked going to California to see her brother and sister the best because she loved the weather there. In 1994, Gerrit & Henrietta moved from their farm into Boyden where they lived for 18 years.
Henrietta and Gerrit both moved to Prairie View in Sanborn in August of 2012. She loved it when her family members came to visit and they could play Spinner.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 72 years, Gerrit, and five children: Leon & his wife Carolyn of Boyden; Arlen & his wife Carla of Garretson, SD; Arlys and her husband Fred Reimers of Sheldon; Stanley and his wife Marlys of George; and LaVonne and her husband Clark Van Schepen of Boyden. She also loved her 19 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Johanna Freerks of Long Beach, CA and sisters-in-law Lorraine Bos of Missouri, Frances Freerks, Catherine Krull, and Cornelia Van Westen, all of George.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Dena Klarenbeek, Bertha Bliek, Minnie Klarenbeek, Gerrit Bos, Gertrude Siebrands, Alice Koele, Lena Groen, Carrie Koele, Gerrit John Bos, and 4 children who died in infancy.
