HAROLD R. WINKEL
Harold Ralph Winkel was born to Albert and Elsie (Getting) Winkel on September 9, 1920 on the family farm near Sanborn, Iowa. He attended country school and Ashton High School, and then had a corn shelling business with his father. He entered the military on July 4, 1942 and served with distinction until 1945 earning the Bronze Star for Meritorious service. On May 25, 1943 he was united in marriage to Hazel Johnson. They had two daughters, Judy and Janet. Hazel passed away on July 3, 1990. Harold married Edna Hilliard on February 18, 1991 in Ashton, Iowa.
Harold was actively engaged in farming his entire life. He will particularly be remembered for his love of machinery, and could still be found combining corn and soybeans at 86 years old. Harold was a life long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashton where he served as Elder and Trustee. He served on the Farmers Mutual Insurance Association Board of Directors for 29 years and the Ashton State Bank Board of Directors for 23 years.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Edna, his daughters Judy of Dallas, TX, and Janet Vetrovec and husband Ken and grandson Paul of Racine, WI, grandson David Vetrovec and wife Erica of Madison, WI, and Brian Vetrovec of Denton, TX; as well as four stepchildren, Rhonda Carrier and husband Gerad of Kobe, Japan, Rodney and Mary Getting of Lincoln, NE, Robin and Avis Getting of Sioux City, IA and Reid and Lisa Getting of Portland, OR, and seven step grandchildren; a sister Dortha Winkel of Eden Prairie, MN, Charles Vander Pol who faithfully worked for Harold for 46 years and his wife Pearl, sister-in-law Cleo Winkel of Sheldon, sister-in-law Shirley Ackerman and husband Cecil of Sibley and a host of other relatives and friends.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife Hazel, his parents, and two brothers Merton and Kenneth and Kenneth’s wife Marjorie.
