Glen Richard Waggoner was born on March 13, 1927 on the family farm northwest of Sutherland, Iowa. Family legend says that dad’s uncle, Charlie Waggoner, wore out a set of tire chains getting the doctor to and from Primghar. Glen received his elementary education at the Highland township country school number two. Glen was baptized at the Sutherland Church of Christ on Sunday, April 19, 1942. Glen graduated from Sutherland High School in May 1945.
Glen was unable to attend his high school graduation commencement due to the fact that he had enlisted in the United States Navy. His naval basic training took place at the Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois. He continued training for deployment at Farragut Naval Training Station near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. In 1945, Glen was deployed to Cavite Naval Base in Cavite City, Philippines. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Navy in 1945.
Glen married Elaine Richter on April 15, 1956 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Germantown, Iowa. To this union were born two sons, Dale and Dan. Glen and Elaine started farming in 1956 on the George Engelke farm one-quarter mile west of Sutherland. In 1962 Glen and Elaine moved to the family farm where he was born. They farmed there until they retired from farming in 1993.
Left to cherish Glen’s memory is his wife of 64 years, Elaine. Two sons, Dale Waggoner, and his wife Rochelle, of Spencer, IA. Dan Waggoner, and his wife Carmen, of Sutherland, IA. Three grandchildren; Emily Prochnow, and her husband Jonathon, of Eden Prairie, MN; Abbie Kershner, and her husband Kyler, of New London, MN; and Molly Lovin, and her husband Luke, of Spencer, IA. One step-grandson Kevin Kruse, and wife Jennifer, of Sioux Falls, SD. Eight great-grandchildren Owen, Nora, and Emmett Prochnow, Crew and Collins Kershner, Isla, June, and Malin Lovin; and one step-granddaughter Maysa Kruse. One sister-in-law Jackie Waggoner, and many relatives and friends.
Glen is preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Ruth (Bidwell) Waggoner; his brother Don (Skeet) Waggoner; sister-in-law Winnie Waggoner, brother-in-law Donald (Darlene) Richter, and sister-in-law Joanne (Wilbur) Kaiser.
