GILDA DE WAAY
Gilda (McCarthy) De Waay was born on August 22, 1933 in rural Ashton, Iowa. The fifth of seven children born to Lloyd and Louise (Grewe) McCarthy. When she was five she moved with her family to Sheldon, Iowa.
Gilda worked at the Sun Newspaper office until her marriage to Claude De Waay on May 31, 1952. They were engaged in farming near Archer, Iowa until 1977. They then moved into Sheldon in 1978. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude on December 5, 1983. She passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2005 at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, Iowa, reaching the age of 72 years, 3 months and 18 days.
Gilda was known throughout the years for taking care of children in her home. She had special memories of taking care of Byron, Bonita, Scott and Stacy De Waay, Michael McCarthy and Kevin Baxter. Fond memories were made with nieces and nephews that spent time at “the farm”. After moving to Sheldon, she took care of other special children as well. Gilda was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sheldon and throughout the years Mr. and Mrs. De Waay enjoyed family fishing trips to Minnesota.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three daughters and their spouses, Denise and John Peacock of Severance, Colorado; Abby and Steve Vogelaar of Sheldon, Iowa; Claudia and Barry Staples of Sheldon, Iowa; ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three sisters, Marilyn and her husband, Simon Botello of Norwalk, California; Audrey Schnider of Sheldon, Iowa; Shirley Ver Hoof of Artesia, California; two brothers, Merwin “Jack” and his wife, Evelyn McCarthy of Sheldon, Iowa; David and his wife, Debra McCarthy of Sgt. Bluff, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude De Waay; her parents, Lloyd and Louise McCarthy; and a brother, Lloyd McCarthy Jr.
