GERRIT R. BOOGERD
Gerrit “Gary” Richard Boogerd, the son of Sidney and Josie (Kuiper) Boogerd, was born December 31, 1927 in Hull, Iowa. He received his education in Hull and graduated from the Hull High School in 1946. He attended Central College in Pella, Iowa for 2 years, and then served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge from the service, Gerrit was united in marriage to Joyce Verhoef on June 6, 1952 in Pella, Iowa. Gary attended and graduated from Hope College in Holland, Michigan and then Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan. Gary served as a Reformed Church of America Minister at churches in Hisel, Kentucky, Litchville and North Marion, North Dakota and Lester, Iowa. He then attended Northwestern College to receive his education degree and for 23 years he taught and coached at the Little Rock Community School in Little Rock, Iowa before retiring in 1992. Gerrit and Joyce enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 9 years. In 2001, they moved from Little Rock to Sheldon, Iowa. Gerrit passed away at sunrise on Sunday, April 4, 2010 at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon, Iowa reaching the age of 82 years, 3 months and 4 days.
He was a member of Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon and was an active member of the Little Rock, Buss Johnson Post #316 American Legion. He enjoyed reading, attending his grandchildren’s many activities, watching sports on T.V., crocheting gifts for his family members, and reading and studying his Bible.
Gerrit’s life will be cherished by: his wife of 57 years, Joyce of Sheldon; and their four daughters and their spouses, Ruth and David Hobson of Hartley, Iowa; Laurie and Russ Forbes of Lone Tree, Iowa; Rebecca and Butch Anderson of Sheldon; Lois and Kenny Schilling of Little Rock, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by two children, Jean Boogerd in 2003 and John Boogerd in 2005; his parents, two sisters and a brother.
