GERRIT KORTHALS
Gerrit Korthals, age 98, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2015 at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn. Gerrit was born on September 4, 1916 in Boyden, IA to Leonard & Bertha (Evink) Korthals. He grew up on a farm northeast of Boyden and went to Boyden Christian School. He then began farming with his Dad.
Gerrit married Henrietta Bos on February 27, 1941 on a farm near George. To this union, five children were born. Gerrit enjoyed farming. He loved every aspect of the farmmilking cows, baling hay, planting seed and harvesting. Many times Gerrit was found working with his kids on their farm.
In 1994, at the age of 77, Gerrit & Henrietta moved off the farm to Boyden. They both loved gardening and enjoyed taking grandkids fishing. He enjoyed singing with the Sr. Saints for many years. They loved traveling together to many different places.
Gerrit moved to Independent Living at Prairie View in Sanborn in 2012. He continued to live independently until November, 2014 when he went into the Nursing Home. He enjoyed the many friendships he established with other residents and the wonderful workers there. His family was very important to him. He loved an evening spent with any one of his kids and a good game of Spinner.
Left to cherish his memory are five children: Leon & his wife, Carolyn of Boyden; daughter-in-law, Carla Korthals of Sioux Falls, SD; Arlys and her husband, Fred Reimers of Sheldon; Stanley and his wife, Marlys of George; and LaVonne and her husband, Clark Van Schepen of Boyden. He also loved his 19 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Frances Freerks, Catherine Krull and Cornelia Van Westen all of George.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Henrietta (10-16-13) and son, Arlen Korthals (6-5-14) and his siblings, Effie Green, Hank Korthals and Lawrence Korthals.
