GERALD L. “FUNNY” JOHANNSEN
Gerald L. “Funny” Johannsen, the son of Herman and Grace (Cooper) Johannsen, was born July 18, 1916 at Calumet. Iowa. He received his education first in Calumet and later in Sutherland, graduating from Sutherland High School. He went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II in Germany receiving the rank of Sgt. In January of 1944, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Westphalen in Royal, Iowa. Their married life was spent in Sutherland, where they raised their family. Gerald was self employed as a carpenter in the construction business. He built many homes in the Sutherland area. He entered the Sutherland Care Center in January of 2005 and passed away at the care center on Thursday, September 28, 2006, reaching the age of 90 years, 2 months and 10 days.
He was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland. He was a member of the Sutherland American Legion for over 50 years and had served on the Sutherland Fire Department for over 25 years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, especially growing flowers.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Dorothy of Sutherland; three sons and their wives, Gregory and Tonya Johannsen and Terry and Shawna Johannsen all of Plano, Texas; Dennis and Carol Johannsen of Sioux City, Iowa; also seven grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Thelma Johannsen of Spencer, Iowa; also many relatives and friends.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Burdette and Don; and two sisters, Eva and Edith.
