ETHEL M. MCDANIEL
Ethel Marie McDaniel, the daughter of Louis and Agatha (Brooke) Meis was born May 10, 1919 in Geddes, South Dakota. She graduated from Geddes High School and then attended Normal Training for teachers. She taught in rural “one-room” schoolhouses in Geddes and Charles Mix County until 1946. Ethel and Ross McDaniel were united in marriage on August 24, 1946. They moved to Elk Point, South Dakota where they owned and operated a café until 1950. Ethel then returned to teaching elementary grades in North Sioux City, Jefferson and Elk Point, South Dakota. She retired in 1982 after 41 years in education. During those years, she took night classes, attended workshops and summer sessions to earn her degree. In 1966, she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of South Dakota. In 1983, she moved to Paullina, Iowa to be near her family. When her family relocated to Sioux Falls in 2008, she once again joined them.
She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the South Dakota Education Association. She enjoyed cooking, watching sports, reading, playing cards and games with her family and having coffee with her many friends.
Grateful for sharing her life are her son, Gene (Alison) McDaniel; grandchildren, Ross (Kipley) McDaniel, Molly McDaniel (fiancé, Chris Clark); great-granddaughter, Kaylor McDaniel all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She also leaves several special cousins and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her brother, Donald Meis.
