ETHEL FERNE SHANER
Ethel Ferne Shaner, the daughter of Nels and Ann (Fries) Jensen, was born December 2, 1913 in Inwood, Iowa. She received her education in Rock Rapids and Sheldon. Ethel worked for Ellerbroek’s Dress Shop and Geiger’s Gift Shop in Sheldon. On June 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to Clyde Fredrick Shaner in Sheldon and they were blessed with a son, James. Her husband preceded her in death on December 5, 1965 in Sheldon. After her marriage she worked for J.C. Penney for 16 years. She moved to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon and later moving to the Northwest Iowa Health Center ~ Senior Care in June of 2000. She passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2007 at the Care Center in Sheldon, reaching the age of 93 years, 1 month and 26 days.
Ethel was a member of the Sheldon United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where she actively served as the Chairperson of the Communion Committee in 1981; she also served on the Memorial Committee and was the Nursery Coordinator for 12 years. She loved to be with the little ones and she was a member of the Red Hat Society. Her hobbies were baking and having friends over for a meal, gardening, knitting and playing cards.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a son, James Shaner and his wife, Pamela of Naperville, IL; two grandsons, Jeffrey Shaner of Columbus, OH; Jonathan Shaner and his wife, Mary of Atlanta, GA; nieces and nephews, Margaret Kyle of Rock Rapids, IA; Bud and Marion Kyle of Milford, IA; Ruby Bomgaars of Council Bluffs, IA; Joan and Harvey Schmidt of Sioux Falls, SD; Jerry Calnon of Fairfield, IA; many great nieces and nephews as well as a host of other friends. She is also survived by two special “little friends” ~ Kristopher Tatsumi and David Ursin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister, Verna Kyle and a nephew, Loran Kyle.
