ESTHERMARIE P. PAPE
Esthermarie Pauline “Smitty” Pape was born in Hospers, Iowa on March 30, 1926, the daughter of Mathias H. and Adella Kathryn (Gloden) Schmit. She was raised in the Hospers area and received her first eight years of education at St. Anthony’s Catholic School in Hospers. She then attended Hopers Public High School, where she graduated in 1944. She married Leander H. Pape on January 23, 1960, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hospers. After their marriage they made their home in Sheldon, Iowa. Smitty passed away peacefully at her home in Sheldon, Iowa on Friday, January 27, 2006, following a lengthy illness, reaching the age of 79 years.
She was member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Sheldon and of the Ladies Guild. Smitty will be fondly remembered for always having the coffee pot on, a plate of cookies out, and ready for a game of cards.
Esthermarie leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Leander of Sheldon; two daughters, Leann Pape and her fiancé, Bob Thompson both of Palmer Lake, Colorado; Nonalee and her husband, Brad Gardner of Coralville, Iowa; one son, Darren Lee Pape of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Kathryn Anne and Anthony James Gardner of Coralville, Iowa; two brothers, Reginald Schmit of Aurora, Colorado and Marcel and his wife, Mildred Schmit of Cottage Grove, Minnesota; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Milton and Roland Schmit.
