ELMER M. DEN HARTOG
Elmer Marvin Den Hartog, the son of Jake and Merle (Horn) Den Hartog, was born May 25, 1923 on a farm south of Boyden, Iowa. He attended a country school near Sheldon, Iowa. Elmer was united in marriage to June Kwikkel on September 16, 1942 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. After their marriage the couple moved to California and then back to Iowa, where he was inducted into the United States Air Corps. He served his country during World War II and was stationed in Italy, where he successfully flew on 50 missions on a B-24. After the service they returned to the Boyden and Sheldon, Iowa area. Elmer owned and operated his own trucking company for many years and also drove long hauls for Midwest Transport out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He continued to drive trucks for local businesses in Sheldon even after he retired. He passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2005 at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, Iowa, reaching the age of 82 years, 6 months and 13 days.
Elmer was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sheldon. He enjoyed airplanes, either be from reading books and magazines about them, to building and flying them. He was a member of the Sky-High Flyers of Sheldon and of the EAA of Wisconsin and he attended this week-long Air show every year in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, June of Sheldon, Iowa; and their 4 children, Pamela Den Hartog of San Pedro, California; Craig and his wife, Patricia Den Hartog of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; Patric and his wife, Maggie Den Hartog of Chicago, Illinois; Patrice Den Hartog of Alexandria, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Brian, Jamie and Melissa Den Hartog; Tina and Marc Den Hartog; Justin and Zachary Madsen; three sisters-in-law, Jeanette Den Hartog of St. Louis, Missouri; “Jo” Den Hartog and Dorothy Den Hartog both of Sheldon, Iowa; also other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Lawrence, Howard, Don and Alvin; two sisters, Ethel Kuyper in 2004 and Lois Van Meeteren in 2005.
