ELMER J. STEGEMANN
Elmer John Stegemann, the son of Henry and Wilhelmina (Rohde) Stegemann was born January 27, 1927 in Sheridan Township in Sioux County, Iowa. He moved to Matlock as a small boy and received his education in Matlock schools. He was called into the service during W.W. II and served in the Navy. After his discharge he retuned to Matlock and began his employment with Brinkman Produce driving truck which he did until they closed. On June 19, 1959, he was united in marriage to Gwenda Fliear at the St. Paul Lutheran Parsonage in Sheldon. The couple’s entire married life has been spent in Matlock. Elmer later worked in transportation for AGP until he retired and in his retirement years he worked 10 years for the Schwebach Tree Service in Matlock. He passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at the Sanford Sheldon Senior Care after a one month battle with cancer, reaching the age of 80 years, 9 months and 10 days.
He was baptized and confirmed at the St. John Lutheran Church in rural Boyden and was currently a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon. He was a member of the Matlock Fire Department for many years and the Sheldon American Legion Post #145. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking.
Left to cherish his memory his wife, Gwenda of Matlock; two sons and their wives, Kevin and Laura Stegemann of Des Moines, Iowa and Bruce and Jo Stegemann of Matlock; four grandchildren, Caleigh Mormann, Sara, Jason and Jenna Stegemann; also one brother and his wife, Harold and Agnas Stegemann in South Carolina; two sisters and their husbands, Lucile and Lambert Beyer of Hull and Karen and John Beyer of Boyden; a very special friend, Gus Gustafson; also nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Emma Paulsen.
The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall
not want. He maketh me to lie
down in green pastures; He leadeth
me beside still waters. He
restoreth my soul; He leadeth me
in the paths of righteousness for
His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of death, I will
fear no evil; for Thou art with me;
Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort
me; Thou preparest a table before
me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou anointest my head with oil,
my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall
follow me all the days of my life;
and I will dwell in the house of the
Lord forever.
