ELLA W. HATFIELD
Ella Wilhelmine Hatfield, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Brinkert) Hibbing, was born June 21, 1908 on the family farm west of Paullina, Iowa. She received her education in a country school near Paullina and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Germantown on April 9, 1922. On June 21, 1928, she was united in marriage to Orville J. Hatfield. Ella worked as a bookkeeper for Dr. Van Tuyl before she and her husband purchased a grocery store in Paullina in 1934. They owned and operated the business until 1948. Her husband preceded her in death on July 11, 1986 in Sioux City. Ella remained in her own home until the last few years, when she resided in the Paullina and Sutherland Care Center. She passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, reaching the age of 100 years, 9 months and 5 days.
She was a long-time member of the Zion Lutheran Church and its Dorcas Society. She was an avid bridge player, belonging to the local bridge club. Ella was active in various volunteer organizations. Her interests included quilting, gardening and especially her grandchildren.
Ella is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William and Mary Hatfield of Grand Marais, Minnesota; four grandchildren and their spouses, Scott Greg & Shirley; Mark & Wendy and Lynn and Paul; six great-grandchildren, Teresa, Kristy, Drew, Camille, Kate and Dana; plus nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and twelve brothers and sisters.
