ELIZABETH M. MILLER

Elizabeth Margrethe Miller was born April 15, 1928 to Anders and Esther (Ekholm) Larsen, three miles southwest of Paullina, where they lived on a farm along Mill Creek. She was an only child who spent a lot of time outdoors helping her father with the chores, milking, field work and during her free time, spending time with various pets around the farm. She had a special relationship with animals and was even able to train her dogs to pull a small sleigh.
She attended country school two miles northwest of their home until the 8 grade; she then went to Paullina High School graduating in 1946. She attended Gustavus Alophus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, where she studied liberal arts and learned to swim. Elizabeth also studied art and was very talented in drawing and painting.
Elizabeth returned home to the farm in 1948 and because of health problems, she was unable to continue her college education. She especially enjoyed helping her father with the outdoor work on the farm. In 1955, she and her parents made a trip to Sweden and Denmark to visit Elizabeth’s aunts, uncles and cousins that she had only seen in photos.
In 1959, she married Stewart Martin Riecke and had two daughters, Elsa and Inge. They were married for nine years. In 1974, she married Donald Miller and together they farmed for nearly twenty years until their retirement in 1992. During their years together, they enjoyed traveling, visits with their grandchildren and also their dogs, Peggy, Bessy and Princess.
When her daughters went to college, Elizabeth renewed her interest in art and joined the local art club. She painted many pictures, which she used to decorate her home.
Elizabeth was a life-long member of Siloam Lutheran Church, women’s circle and organist. She was an avid gardener, raising large vegetable and flower gardens around her home. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, cooking, music and bird watching.
Elizabeth passed away on November 4, 2006 at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 20 days.
She is survived by her two daughters, Elsa Casey and her husband, Patrick and their children, Claire, Diedre and Linnea Casey of Griswold, Iowa; Inge Borland and her special friend, Craig Upchurch of Kennewick, Washington; two step-daughters, Sandy Steinberg and her daughter, Alexis of Fridley, Minnesota; Sharol Roder and her husband, Tom of Granville, Iowa and their children, Kelly and Sarah Roder; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Donald in 2003.
