EDWARD BAARTMAN
Edward Baartman was born November 5, 1918, in Matlock, Iowa to Peter and Carrie (Sneller) Baartman. Edward attended grade school in Middleburg, Iowa. He married Anna Vande Vegte on June 16, 1938 in Middleburg, Iowa and to this union were born 3 sons and 1 daughter. Edward and Anna lived in Middleburg and then moved to Boyden, Iowa, where Edward worked for Grooters Repair and Smit & Sons Beef Processors until his retirement. Edward had served in the United States Army during World War II and had received a special recognition as a 60 year veteran. His wife, Anna passed away on November 29, 1980 in Sheldon, Iowa. On June 23, 1985, Edward was united in marriage to Katie Thovson in Alta, Iowa. They made their home in Boyden for 10 years and then moved to Alta, Iowa, where Edward enjoyed woodworking. They also enjoyed camping at the Iowa Great Lakes. In April of 2004, they moved to Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon, Iowa. Katie passed away on December 31, 2005. Edward continued to live at Fieldcrest, but because of declining health, he moved to the Northwest Iowa Health Center – Senior Care, where he passed away on October 10, 2006, reaching the age of 87 years, 11 months and 5 days.
He was a member of the Sheldon United Methodist Church and the Wm Monster Post # 272, American Legion of Boyden.
Edward leaves to cherish his memory, 3 sons and their wives, Kenneth and Shirley Baartman, Edwin and Kathy Baartman and Allen and Bonnie Baartman all of Boyden, Iowa; 1 daughter and her husband, Patricia and John Steensma of Sanborn, Iowa; step-children and their spouses, Paul and Carole Thovson of Mesa, Arizona; Dennis and Marlys Thovson of Berkley Heights, New Jersey; Janet and Don Peterson of Alta, Iowa; he is also survived by, 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 6 step-great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wives, his parents, a brother, Peter; a sister, Jean Brunsting and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Baartman.
